After taking the world by storm with his unique blend of eastern inspired melodies and sounds with hard hitting melodic riddim vibes and futuristic feelings- the awesome producer Papa Khan had a chat with us recently following his debut release on Monstercat; ‘The Tide‘!
Hi Papa Khan! How are you doing? Where are you in the world right now?
Hi, I’m doing great! Thanks for asking! I’m currently living in the city where I grew up, which is Palangka Raya, Central Borneo Island, Indonesia.
What started you on this awesome journey of producing electronic music?
When I was little, I had already loved music so much. Whenever I listened to my favourite music, it got me really inspired and I wanted to do the same things that my favourite musicians did. So, I ended up making music too!
How would you define your sound?
Gloomy, energetic, sometimes weird…
What limitations do you put on yourself when making music (if any)?
I don’t put limits on myself. I just simply let my creative juices flow inside my head.
What steps do you take to stand out from the crowd, and make your brand unique?
Papa Khan’s music is basically sad and melancholic. I’m trying to combine these aesthetic elements (you know, some sad boy stuff, haha) into my electronic sound. Along with some sci-fi and fantasy feels.
I would love to hear more about the making of “The Tide” – What inspired the tune? How did it all come together?
Most of my projects start with some random ideas in my head. So “The Tide” actually came across my mind one day as something stompy yet melodic. Whenever I listen to “The Tide”, I see a huge wave in the ocean. And I just named the track after the meaning behind it.
There are sooooooo many flips of “Rain” out there, do you have a favourite?
Yes! Shark’s flip of “Rain” is probably my favourite!
Who would you most love to collaborate with over the next year?
I would love to collaborate with Xilent, Getter, Tisoki, Flux Pavilion, Svdden Death and Oolacile! Those are my biggest influences in music.
Would you like to share anything else with our followers?
I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting this project. Music is the only thing I’ve wanted to do in my life and it’s the only thing I want to live with. I am lucky to have a lot of people on the internet supporting me and I’m super grateful for it!
